She was born April 22, 1929, in Fulton County to John W. Kaley and Bodie Lang Kaley. She was married June 23, 1951, in Logansport, to Ernest E. McQuiston, who preceded Betty in death in 1972. She retired in 1992 from Trelleborg Automotive (General Tire Company) after 42 years of service and had also worked at H.W. Gossard Company. Betty was a member of Eagles Auxiliary and the First Assembly of God Church in Minnesota. She enjoyed bowling, fishing and spending time with her grandchildren. Survivors include sons, Steve L. McQuiston, Logansport, and Terry McQuiston and wife, Lori, Logansport; brothers, Kenneth Kaley, LaPorte, Virgil Kaley and wife, Ann, Logansport, and Phil Kaley and wife, Helen, Park Rapids, Minn.; sister, Helen Eileen Hizer, Indianapolis; and grandchildren, Derrick McQuiston and LeAnne Alder. She was preceded in death by three brothers, John Jr., Harold and Bob Kaley. Services are 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Gundrum Funeral Home with the Rev. Charles Azbell officiating. Shortly thereafter Archie ran away and started working to support himself. I assume their sister Bertie stayed with their mother, Alean. Archie was a quick learner and had many jobs...Archie worked for Kaiser Shipbuilding in Oregon before moving to Hawaii. Archie was working as a machinist and draftsman at the Kaiser Shipyard in Honolulu, Hawaii during the war and this was where he met his 3rd wife, Maybelle. They were married on 10/31/1953, and shortly thereafter purchased an inexpensive piece of land, next to a cemetery in the Kalihi Valley. Archie designed and built a very modern and innovative home (for the time), made predominately of glass. They moved onto the property as soon as the basement was complete and continued to build as time and money would allow; they remained in their beloved home for the rest of their lives. My grandfather had 3 children with his first wife, Mildred Arvilla Norton; Elma, Royal and Lance Barnett (listed in birth order). Archie & his 2nd wife, Pauline had no children together; they lived in Beaverton, OR during their marriage. Since Archie & Maybelle married later in life they never had children of their own; however, in 1977 they began babysitting Devon Detweiler (the daughter of a friend of theirs), whom they grew to love immensely. | 309 | ARLINGTON — Steven Ray McChristian, 73, of Arlington, passed away on Sunday, Aug. 8, 2021, at his residence. Steve was born in Cairo, Illinois, on Oct. 30, 1947, to the late James and Frances Burgess McChristian. He was a member and recent music leader at Hopewell Baptist Church in Arlington. He was also a Mason with the Bardwell Masonic Lodge #499. Steve served three terms as sheriff of Carlisle County from 1999 until his retirement in 2011. Before his law enforcement career, was an over-the-road trucker for 28 years. Steve was a cowboy at heart and often felt he was born in the wrong period of American history. He loved horses and was an active member of the Arlington Riding Club. Steve enjoyed being outdoors, especially taking care of his yard. Steve is survived by his daughter, Stephanie Caldwell (Devon) of West Paducah; two brothers, Mike McChristian (Kay) of Arlington and Bob McChristian (Kim) of Lone Oak; two stepdaughters, Johnna Martin (Davey) of Arlington and Janet Nicholas of Clinton; two stepsons, Tommy Clark (Donna) of Cunningham and Mark Dowdy of Clinton; two sister-in-laws, Nancy Black (Larry) of Bardwell and Freda Duncan of Arlington; five grandchildren, Kennedy Caldwell, Karly Caldwell, Allannah Martin, Easton Martin and Cellicia Clark; two nephews, Joe Michael McChristian and Steven Dowdy; two nieces, Monica Muscovalley and Mikaela McChristian; and his special friends and family, Lilly Carol Morefield, Nancey Dodge, Kaye, and Jakie Mix, Dustin Burgess and Cathy Beane. He was preceded in death by his wife, Marilyn Pearson McChristian, and his parents. | 315 | Article: CHURNING SEA CLAIMS LIFE OF SIOUX FALLS YOUTH Pvt. Robert H. McQuisten Drowns in Pacific Ocean Near Camp Ord. Camp Ord, Calif., March 24.--Fate dealt a stiff blow to the 147th field artillery Sunday morning as Pvt. Robert Harold McQuisten, a member of Headquarters battery lost his life when he was swept from a rocky point by a sudden treacherous breaker into a boiling section of Pacific surf. McQuisten, a radio and telegraph operator, was on an outing in Point Lobos reserve state park, about four miles from Carmel, Calif., with two other members of the regiment when the tragic incident occurred. Rescue Attempts Fail he had clambered down to an apparently safe ledge in search of a vantage point to snap a picture of the ocean when a huge wave struck without warning and tossed him helpless into a churning pocket of the surf. All rescue attempts proved futile. McQuisten, who had enlisted in the national guard 28 June, 1940, attended the fourth army maneuvers at Fort Ripley, Minnesota, during August and was inducted with his organization at Sioux Falls on November 25. The soldier had been rated a specialist, sixth class, on January 3, 1941 for his ability as key operator. Search Continues The sea's victim had been participating in the regular training of his unit and in addition had been attending a special class in operating and radio theory four hours daily. The ocean had not yielded the body but a four man daylight patrol was to be maintained until the search was finished. The Headquarters battery. Young McQuisten was born in Sioux Falls, November 21, 1920, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Francis M. McQuisten, 1913 South Duluth Ave. He attended Mark Twain School and was graduated from Washington High School in 1938. He had been employed at the Riggs Optical Company here for about six months and was a truck driver for the Guernsey Dairy previous to the time he left for Camp Ord. Surviving are his parents; two brothers, Eugene, Sioux Falls, and Edwin, Rapid City, and three sisters, Mrs. Frank Clapper, Mrs. Marvin Olinger and Rub McQuisten all of Sioux Falls. McQuisten's Body Found Being brought to Sioux Falls from Camp Ord, California for Burial Camp Ord, Calif., April 19.---The body of Pvt. Robert H. McQuisten, a member of Headquarters battery of the 147th field artillery, was recovered and identified Friday. McQuisten drowned off Point Lobos, about 22 miles from this camp, on March 23 while on a sightseeing party with members of his organization. Under the direction of Capt. Walter J. Dean, commanding officer of McQuisten's battery, funeral ceremonies were held Friday afternoon at the chapel in the regimental area. Chaplain Henry T. Praed officiated at the final rites. The body was recovered near the point at which McQuisten met his death. The body left for Sioux Falls this morning. Staff Sgt. | 325 | At the residence of her son, Alfred Lentz, in Morton, Ray county, Tuesday night, May 30th, 1893, between 8 and 9 o'clcok Mrs. Lucinda Lentz, aged between 75 and 80 years, of heart disease. The deceased had eaten a hearty supper and was apparently in perfect health, and no one had the least idea of her being called away so soon. She was partially undressed prenaratory to retiring when she fell upon the floor and soon expired. The deceased was one of the oldest residents of that section of the county, and had been for more than fifty years a devout member of the Methodist church and an exemplary christian women, and raised a large and respectable family, who had her reiligious influence. Funeral services will be held at Millville Thursday at 11 oclock by Rev. Winstead, after which the burial of the body will take place. It can truly be said of her that a mother in Israel has gone. "Ray County Conservator" 1893 Daughter of Nathan and Ann (McCuistion) Schooler, in Shelbyville, Tennessee. There, she married Thomas Lentz in 1834. In 1836, her parents and siblings all moved to Millville, Ray County, Missouri. In the summer of 1850, Lucinda was pregnant, as her and Thomas, and their 9 children; along with Thomas's mother & sister, all took the 20 day trip by horse and covered wagon to Ray County, settling on a farm northeast of Morton, a few miles south of Millville. In 1852, Lucinda's mother, Ann died, and her father, Nathan died in 1854. Her husband, Thomas then died in 1855, all being buried in Millville Cemetery. Lucinda was left with 11 children, age 3 to 18. Her oldest child, Nathan, became the man of the house and took over making sure the farm land was being cared for. Lucinda's daughter, Ann, married George Letholt in 1857, and they moved to a nearby farm. In 1860, Nathan married Mildred Cox, the daughter of Lorton cox who had the next farm over. Lucinda's sons, Nathan & Thomas left home to fight for the Confederacy during the Civil War. Her son, Josephus, who was in his early 20's did not fight for either side, probably to stay home and protect the farm. The Battle of Shaw's Shop occurred in nearby Morton. After the war, all her children began to get married and move to nearby farms. In her old age, Lucinda moved from each of her children's homes around Morton & Hardin. She died at her son, Alfred's home in Morton, at the age of 75. She was buried alongside her husband and parents. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; two sons, Thomas & Hiram; grandchildren, Fanny Letholt, Mary, Charles, Phil, Elmer, & Monroe Bush, William & Mary Brown, Nathan A., Nathan L., Jesse, Lula, Jacob, Mary, & Theo Lentz; and siblings, James Schooler, Mary Albertson, Margery McCuistion, Elizabeth McCuistion, Martha Graham, and Rebecca Cowsert. Predeceased by her loving husband of 67 years, Jack McQueston. Survived by her children Don (Chris), Karen (Matthew), Dave (Donna) and Alison (Peter). Barb was a loving grandmother to Breanna Wilson (Fraser), Marla Horton (Mike), Blair Cuthbert, Connor McQueston and Jack Adamson, as well as her great-grandson Taylor Michael. Barb is survived by her sister Carol Gregory (George). Born in Timmins on September 29th, 1935, Barb grew up in Toronto. She married Jack in June,1955 and raised their children in Aurora. For much of her their lives, Barb and Jack enjoyed special times creating memories with family and friends at their summer cottage on Lake Kawagama. Barb was special to all who knew and loved her. She was compassionate, supportive, dignified, curious, intelligent and a true lady! Barb was always welcoming and she and Jack offered warm hospitality, conversation and laughter when you arrived at their home. She will be deeply missed. Many thanks to the staff and residents at Riverside Glen where Barb had made many good friends and felt safe and comfortable these last 5 years. | 341 | Becki Goad, of Scottsdale, passed away at age 65 on January 30, 2014 with her family by her side after a valiant 8 ½ year battle with ovarian cancer. Becki was born on August 19, 1948 in Berkeley, California to Melvin and LaVerne McQuistion and moved to Scottsdale in 1953. She attended Scottsdale High School where she met the love of her life, Larry. They attended Arizona State University and were married in 1969. Son Chris and daughter Kimberley came into the family in 1973 and 1975. During their growing up years, Becki was a stay-at-home mom being involved with them in all their activities. Later, she began coaching high school cheer (aka Momma Goad), then began working as a corporate administrator for a restaurant group and an account manager for a large national corporation. Becki loved life and was always laughing and having fun. She was the ringleader, the life of the party and the entertainer. She enjoyed shopping, casino runs, girl's trips, cruises, Facebook, her flower pots, family vacations in Oceanside and the Phoenix Coyotes. She was everyone's best friend and her circle of friends was large including the Crazies, the Fab 5, Our Morris' (19 trips together) and the Bunco Babes. She was a grandma to 3 wonderful grandchildren who were the light of her life. She loved attending their dance recitals, plays, hockey games, taking them on shopping sprees and having them for sleep overs. She always conveyed words of wisdom to them. Becki is survived by her husband Larry of 44 years, son Chris, daughter Kimberley Nickel (husband Marty), mother LaVerne, sisters Kathy, Sue and Tina, brother Scott, grandchildren Kambrie, Kellen and Karis, step grandchildren Kelsey and Alec and great grandson Steven.
