Jewel was the wife of Paul B. Deitz, daughter of Byford Gaddy McCuistion and Lella Baker McCuistion.
She graduated from Central Heights and spent the majority of her life in Nacogdoches County with the exception of the traveling she loved, with her husband, Paul, while he was pipelining. They were married February 15, 1945, and celebrated 40 years together before he passed away in May 1985. She was a long standing member of Bonita Methodist Church and was a member of the VFW Ladies Auxillary. Jewel enjoyed vegetable gardening and canning the results as well as embroidery. She never met a stranger and felt blessed with the "talent" of talking, she was known as "Ms. Jewel" for 17 years at Kinfolks Restaurant, and was a care-giver and "Mom" to all she came in touch with. Her door was always open and you always felt at home around Jewel. Jewel is survived by a daughter, Dianne Ludlow and husband, Richard of Beckville, Texas; sons, Ronnie Deitz, of Nacogdoches, and Robert Deitz and Karen Hoffman of Benton, Louisiana; grandchildren, Paul-Robert Deitz and wife, Shana of Las Vegas, Nevada, Kacee Summers and husband, Jay of Kingman, Arizona, Michael Ludlow and wife, Jennifer of Grand Saline, Texas, and Kenny Deitz of Beaumont, Texas; great grandchildren, Alyx Deitz, Rion Deitz, Kaylah Deitz, Kallie Summers, Keeleigh Summers, Jaxsen Ludlow and Tucker Ludlow; brother, Smith M. "Shorty" McCuistion and wife, Lois of Kyle, Texas; neices, nephews, extended family and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband Paul Deitz; parents, Lella Ruth and B. G. McCuistion; and two brothers; Bryant and W. E. McCuistion. Special thanks to Dr. Ted Ledet and staff for many years of care and compassion; many thanks to the staff of Rock Haven Nursing Home for the loving, compassionate care Jewel received for over 4 years and especially for the heart-felt care extended to Jewel and the family during the last few weeks; and lastly, for the many ways heart-felt comfort was extended by family and friends. Funeral service for Jewel is planned for 2 p.m., Tuesday, November 22, 2011, at Laird Funeral Home in Nacogdoches with Randy Sitton and Bobbie Holloway officiating and burial to follow in Old North Church Cemetery.
