1809 Obituary of Willis Lloyd McCuistion

Willis Lloyd McCuistion (Willie to many who knew him), age 84, went to be with the Lord on April 22, 2022. He was born May 28, 1937 to James and Nellie McCuistion and grew up in Fowler, Colorado in a family with 5 sisters and 1 brother. When he went to Colorado State University, he met his lifelong sweetheart Fran Davison and they began a 62 year journey of married love on July 19, 1959 at First Methodist Church in Las Animas, Colorado.
Willie always had a passion for going overseas and he was able to couple that passion with his love for agriculture in 1966 when Rockefeller Foundation came looking for promising future leaders at Oklahoma State University where Willie was finishing up his PhD. In October 1967, Willie and Fran packed up their young sons Kevin and Michael and headed to India to help Nobel Peace Prize winner Norm Borlaug and his expanding leadership team in their mission to feed the world (what would eventually be called the 'green revolution"). Less than a year after arriving in India, Willie was asked to lead all of Rockefeller/CIMMYT's projects in North Africa as well as to be the primary geneticist for the country of Tunisia. After developing a leader to take his place in Tunisia, Willie moved his family to Algeria in 1971 to create a new project there while continuing to lead all of North Africa.
In 1975, Willie and Fran decided to move their family to Corvallis, Oregon so that Kevin and Michael could finish their education in the U.S. In Corvallis, Willie took on a new role as an associate professor at Oregon State University but he was also asked to lead an international research team that developed new varieties of wheat in 50 different research stations across 35 different countries. After Kevin and Michael were both in college, Willie took on a new leadership role as the interdisciplinary research leader for WinRock's multi-billion-dollar research project based out of Cairo, Egypt. Even though Willie retired in 1994, he continued to act as a national agricultural consultant with multiple projects in Albania, Uzbekistan, China, and Egypt.
Throughout their lives, Willie and Fran have both had a passion for their Lord Jesus, and in retirement they have devoted themselves to serving family and friends in Oregon, Washington, and Arizona. Willie was particularly fond of the people he met and served in Tucson at Christ Community Church and Rincon Country East. He will be remembered by so many people for his gentle, caring, Christlike concern for them as well as his seemingly endless curiosity about them and their lives. Willie's life verse was Galatians 2:20, "I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me."
Willie is survived by his wife Fran, his son Kevin and wife Kristin, his daughter-in-law Lisa, his grandchildren Shawn McCuistion, Jonathan McCuistion, Grace McCuistion, Patrick McCuistion and his wife Becca; his sisters Verena Rogge, Dorothy Baker, and Maxine Adcock as well as many nieces and nephews. All of these he loved and touched deeply. His son Michael passed away in 2021.
Please join us in celebrating Willie's life on Saturday May 14, 2022 at 2:00 at Christ Community Church, 530 S. Pantano Road, Tucson, AZ 85710. In lieu of flowers or gifts, donations may be made Christ Community Church, Missions.

She was a very close friend of Nellie Inez Smith, although a few years older. Nellie was a classmate at Fowler High School with Floy Gladys Low. During her Senior year at Fowler High, Floy dated and later married the high school commercial teacher, George G. McCuistion. Nellie dated George's brother, Jim--later she married him. Olga became acquainted with Harold Low, Floy's brother, and married him. Watson, Olga E. (I196)

1818 Oliver and Betsy probably married in California. Oliver P. is reported to have gone to the gold mines near Sutter's Fort, California, in 1856--in the spring. He is reported to have a brother, Robert. He is reported to have married a woman who had been married before, and who had a small daughter. He is supposed to have left his wife in the summer of 1856 and was not seen by her again; she crossed the mountains to Carson City, where Alvin James was born. Family: Oliver Porter McCuistion / Elizabeth Robbins Cranson (F1479)

1819 Oliver Porter McCuistion reports: "My father's mother came west with her sisters. Went to Placerville. She ran a boarding house. She met two men--McCuistions. She married one (I have been told his name was the same as mine); the other brother's name was Robert. I don't know any thing more about them. My father's mother and her husband had a fight--he took the baby and left--she never seen him again. She got a ride over the mountains with a man who lived in Carson City, Nevada. That is where my father, Alvin James McCuistion, was born--that is about as far as I can go. She made it to Tooele and married William Culbertson Gollaher and had a son by him. Tyson Gollaher--he is dead. My father never knew his father--he never tried to learn anything of them."

Oliver was said to be a bachelor.

1831 On Wednesday, November 25, 2020 Betty Jean Jackson McCuistion, incredible sister, wife, mother and grandmother died after a three-year battle with ovarian cancer.
Betty was born on July 2, 1933 in Orangeburg, SC to Hammie Murray and Dollie Robinson Jackson. She was the youngest of four and enjoyed growing up surrounded by aunts, uncles & cousins. She was Salutatorian of her high school class and drum major of the high school band. After graduating from Winthrop College with a degree in English, Betty, her sister Joyce & a friend moved to Houston, Texas to teach. Soon Betty met an accountant/cowboy neighbor, fell in love with and married Jack McCuistion on July 20, 1958. Theirs was a match made in heaven…
Together they raised two daughters, Jan and Linda, who considered their parents the “best in the world”. Betty chose to stay home with her girls and became the number one volunteer at her daughters’ schools and their many other activities. She also loved serving over 30 years as a “Pink Lady” hospital volunteer in Nederland, TX and then Lufkin, TX.
Betty enjoyed her wonderful bridge friends, golf buddies, book club cohorts and fabulous travel companions, ultimately visiting five out of seven continents. Betty’s biggest passion was her family, especially after her 4 grandchildren were born. Granny made sure her grandchildren knew the importance of God, family, hard work and the depth of a grandparent’s love. Even after losing her devoted husband Jack to pancreatic cancer in 1994, Betty’s strength of faith enabled her to continue living a life full of love, joy, and laughter with family and friends.
Betty was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, her sister, Margie Laughery and husband David, her brother James Jackson and wife Sue and son-in-law Jay Downey. She is survived by daughter Jan Stolze and husband Michael (Southlake, TX), daughter Linda Downey (College Station, TX), grandchildren Jerry Downey (Chicago, IL), Jacob Downey (Leander, TX), Sarah Stolze (Austin, TX), Melanie Stolze (Southlake, TX) and many cherished nieces, nephews and cousins in TX, NC, and SC.
Betty’s family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks for the incredible love and compassionate care shown by Dr. Richard Smith and staff, Dr. Erin Fleener and everyone with The Cancer Clinic & her amazing team from Hospice Brazos Valley.
Due to the pandemic, the family has chosen to have a private Celebration of Life. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Hospice Brazos Valley or the charity of your choice.

1834 One of the most mysterious murders that ever occurred in Davenport took place Friday night, Sept. 5, 1873. About half-past 11 o'clock on the night of Sept. 5, 1873, John N. Crawford living on the corner of Eighteenth and Brady streets, was awakened by a terrible noise at the next house, occupied by Mr. Fox. He soon ascertained that it was made by a man on the back porch of the next house, knocking at the door and begging to get in. Mr. Crawford went down town and got Officers Feid and Maquire, who returned with him, and took the man into custody. They found him very weak, so much so that they had to send for an express wagon to remove him to the hospital on Main street. Mrs. Fox says the man beat her back door loudly and persistently and begged most piteously to be taken in. But they feared to do so, fearing he was a burglar. The man had gained his entrance through the back gate, the front one being locked. On the way to the hospital the officers questioned the man and he said his name was Robert McQuestian and that his home was in Alpha, Ill. He said he had been attending the fair and had been in a fight that night, and had been kicked and struck in the head and robbed of $80 in money. He had received a terrible kick in the stomach and died from the effects of internal injuries. He appeared to be under the influence of liquor and was evidently in great pain. He died that night. The body had on a gray scotch suit of clothes. The vest pocket on the right side was slashed open, and one would naturally suppose he had been robbed of watch and chain. He bore the appearance of being a man of 40 or 45 years of age, weighed about 130 pounds and was about five feet eight inches in height. His face was covered with clotted blood, which had flowed from a wound in the temple, and he was otherwise badly bruised and cut about the head and body. The body was placed in a receiving vault at Oak Dale Cemetery, to await recognition. On the morning of Sept. 9, a brother and two friends of the murdered man from Alpha came to Davenport and identified the body as that of Robert McQuestian, of Alpha, who had left his home for the purpose of attending the fair at Davenport. he was a quiet, inoffensive man, but to some degree addicted to drink. He was a widower with one child. Nothing was elicited as to the cause of his death. McQuestian, Robert (I26827)
