| 101 | Obituary Betty Mae (Somers) McQuiston, age 95, of Elsie, MI, passed away Friday, February 26, 2021 at her home surrounded by her family. Funeral Services will be held at Smith Family Funeral Homes Elsie, MI, at 1:00 P.M. on Wednesday, March 3, 2021, with Chris Radcliffe officiating. For those unable to attend, the funeral service will be live streamed on Smith Family Funeral Homes Facebook page. Burial will take place at Ford Cemetery, Gratiot County, MI. Visitation will be held on Monday, March 1, 2021 from 6-8 P.M. and on Tuesday, March 2, 2021 from 2-8 P.M. with family present from 2-4 & 6-8 P.M. at Smith Family Funeral Homes, Elsie, MI. Betty was born in Chapin Township, Michigan on January 15, 1926, the daughter of Fay Marion and Dorothy Ellen (Miller) Somers. She graduated from Elsie High School with the class of 1943. Betty worked at the Chapin Telephone Office as the operator. Clifford John McQuiston regularly paid his phone bill, that's where they met and he courted her until they were married on January 21, 1956. They celebrated 50 years of marriage before Clifford's passing on March 5, 2006. Betty grew up during the Depression. She worked on the electric motor assembly line in Owosso supporting the WWII effort. Betty spent many years as a farmer’s wife assisting in running their dairy farm along side her husband. Betty worked at the Ashley Nursing home for 28 years as a nurse’s aid. Betty and Clifford spent winters in St. Cloud, Florida, where they enjoyed interacting with family and friends. She was very artistic and crafty; she enjoyed sewing, crocheting and painting. She also liked reading, baking, gardening, canning, and playing games. Betty loved to watch the Detroit Tigers and MSU sports. She also loved supporting her children in their schooling and sporting events, always making sure they could participate. Betty loved the Lord, was a devoted Christian and an ambassador of God who selflessly contributed to many Christian Organizations in need. She loved her family very much and looked forward to time spent with them. Betty was a member of the Chapin United Methodist Church, the Chapin United Methodist Women, held various positions and she also played piano for the church for many years. She is survived by her children: Rebecca Faye (Glover) Bannerman, Karen Sue (Glover) Louchart and Larry Brooks, Clifford James (Jim) and Joyce McQuiston, Joleen Ann McQuiston, Marilou Kay (McQuiston) and Terry Ayers, Katrina Marie (McQuiston) and Archie Johnson, Gerald (Jerry) Roger McQuiston, 19 grandchildren, 21 great grandchildren, and 4 great great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Clifford, one sister Francis Jones, and brother George Somers. | 102 | Obituary Bradley S. Joyce, 54, Kokomo, passed away at 4:46 a.m. on Friday, May 6, 2016, at St. Vincent Hospital in Kokomo. He was born September 16, 1961, in Kokomo, to Paul E. and Marilyn J. (Bone) Joyce. On November 24, 1979, he married his high school sweetheart, Kaye R. McDaniel, and she survives. He owned and operated Mouser’s Auto Repair and had also worked at Wilson’s Meat Processing. He was an avid dirt track race car fan and raced stockcars and modifieds for over 30 years. He was the crew chief for his oldest grandsons and was the rookie director for the Kokomo Quarter Midget Club. He had a great love for children, especially his three grandsons. In addition to the love of his life, Kaye Joyce, he is survived by two daughters, Nikole (Billy) Bolton, Kokomo, and Autumn (Keith, Jr.) Chesshir, Kokomo; beloved grandsons, Deaven Bolton, Kayeleb Bolton, and Emerson Chesshir; one sister, Janice (Tony) Waggoner, Roann; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents. The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Shirley & Stout Funeral Home & Crematory, 1315 W. | 103 | Obituary Chester “Chet” Clyde Hendricks, 86, Greentown, passed away Tuesday, August 11, 2020, in Century Villa Healthcare, Greentown. Born on July 19, 1934 to the late Oscar and Ellen (Stewart) Hendricks and was raised by Paul and Ruth Marshall. He married Lorena (Bennett) Hendricks on October 8, 1955, at Main Street Christian Church in Greentown and she survives. Chet served in the United States Army from 1952 until 1955 stationed with Infantry A 56th AAA Gun Battalion in Ft. Morgan, Virginia. While serving in the Army his unit trained in atomic bomb testing at White Sands, New Mexico. Chet retired from Millbanks Manufacturing after 40 years of service. He enjoyed spending time and watching his grandchildren and great grandchildren’s sporting events. Chet always enjoyed fishing and hunting. He spent his winters in Alabama with wife, Lorena and loved watching the dolphins come by. In his later years, he loved sitting on his front porch waving at those that went by. He was a member of Jerome Christian church and the Greentown Historical Society. Survivors include wife, Lorena Hendricks; children, Tom (Sandy) Hendricks, John (Angela) Hendricks, Chester “Bud” (Dawn) Hendricks and Joyce (Scott) Flick; grandchildren, Timothy R. (Kimberley) Hendricks, Matthew T. (Kathi) Hendricks, Chad Hendricks, Drew Carrell, Vienna (Ben) Kraay, Ethan Flick, Jerry S. (Jessica) Flick II and Jacob Flick; great-grandchildren, Jenna and Ava Hendricks, Katie and Lauren Hendricks, Austin Smith, Marrin Kindley and Traetin Richardson, Wesley, Colton, Logan Kraay and J.J. | 104 | Obituary D. Kathleen Johnson, Greentown 94 passed away at Century Villa Healthcare, Greentown at 6:05 p.m. Wednesday January 6, 2010. Kathleen was born to Thomas H. And Mae D. (Pine) Swarts in Grant County on November 8, 1915. Her farther died when she was 7 years old. She was raised by her mother and maternal grandparents. She graduated in 1932 from Warren High School in Huntington County. Later that year she attended Ft. Wayne Business College. In 1932 she married Hansel Johnson, he preceded her in death. He passed away August 5, 1980. She belonged to the old Congressional Church in Greentown. And she was a member of Meridian Street Church. She had worked for Sears & Roebuck in the downtown store, Kokomo, and Hills Department Store in downtown Marion and had been an Avon Representative at one time. Being an accomplished pianist, she played for churches, groups and the Eastern Star organization. She was a 50 year plus member of the Greentown Chapter #195 Order of the Eastern Star and served as Worthy Matron in 1959. She belonged to Greentown Past Matrons Club. She is survived by 3 sons and a son-in-law. | 105 | Obituary Donald Raymond Winger, 89, Kokomo, passed away at 5:57 p.m. on Thursday, August 18, 2016, at I.U. North Hospital in Carmel. He was born August 24, 1926, in the farm home in Grant County, to Raymond A. and Lenore (Harter) Winger. On December 1, 1945, he married Julia Claire Pyke, at Kokomo Zion Evangelical Church, and she survives. Don graduated from Jackson Township High School in 1944. He became a farmer, as was his father and grandfathers, and he learned from his father the basics of being a good steward of the soil as well as how to raise livestock. He was a member of Kokomo Zion United Methodist Church where he was very active, serving as Youth Sunday School Teacher, Youth Leader, Sunday School Superintendent, Chairman of Zion Building Programs, Trustee, Finance Committee Staff, Parish Committee, Ad Council Lay Delegate Annual Conference, Welcome Committee, Mission Auction Chairman, Mission Committee Local, Conference and District, United Methodist Conference Mission Board, and District Mission Board. He was also very active in the community, serving on the County Zoning Appeals Board, Township Advisory Board, Eastern School Board, Greentown Area Business Association, Greentown Economic Development Committee, 4-H Leader, 4-H Fair Chairman, Food Tent Chairman, Lions Fair Board, Lions Club President and member, Licensed Auctioneer and Real Estate, Chairman of the Eastern Athletic Boosters, Howard County Farm Bureau Board, Howard County Farm Bureau Coop Board and WCM (Winger, Cheeks and Middlesworth). He had received the 4-H 13 Year Award in 1975, the Bread & Basin Award at the 1995 United Methodist Conference, and the WP Woods Fellow Award from the Lions Club in 2012. He was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather and will be dearly missed by all his family and friends. | 106 | Obituary Dr. Charles Albert Dafoe passed on the evening of November 23rd, 2020 at Brookdale Pinehurst Park in Denver, CO. Dr. Dafoe, known to many as Chuck, and to others as Doc, was born October 22, 1930 in Owensboro, Kentucky to Worth Dafoe and Virginia (Cook) Dafoe, of whom he was the only child. The family of three moved frequently eventually settling in Mount Pleasant, Michigan. He attended the University of Michigan undergraduate school and graduated from the University of Michigan School of Medicine in 1956, where he also was a member of the University of Michigan Men’s Glee Club and the Galen’s Society allowing him ample opportunity to participate in music and travel. He served as a Captain (OB/GYN) in the U.S. Air Force from July of 1957 until receiving an honorable discharge in July of 1959. He took advantage of his time at air force bases to overcome his fear of heights by pursuing and receiving his private pilot’s license. He moved to Denver for his internship and residency, returning to Ann Arbor briefly to practice obstetrics/gynecology, but soon returning to Colorado, where he started in private practice, first with Dr. Waddell and later with Dr. Jack Thorne. He practiced obstetrics/gynecology for 40 years, delivering countless babies and helping care for hundreds of women. In addition to his medical practice, he was a member of many professional organizations including the American College of Surgeons, served as president of the Colorado Board of OB/GYN, and a longtime member of an international group of skiing gynecologists, to name a few. His gregarious spirit and unbeatable charm led him to be loved by family, friends, colleagues, and patients alike, and really anyone who crossed his path. His care for others and earnest pursuit of goals was apparent early on. He was a proud Eagle Scout and considered himself lucky for having always known he wanted to be a doctor. An avid traveler, he visited more than 15 countries, and loved scuba diving and skiing, and served as part of the volunteer ski patrol medic team at Winter Park. His deep bass voice enriched the Colorado Choir for 30 years and the Twelfth Night shows at the University Club. He had a gift for making everyone he interacted with smile and feel important. Retirement in 1998 afforded him the luxury of indulging his passion for reading. His love for life and those living it helped him to power through adversity with a smile and a joke on the ready as evidenced by his cheerful fight through Alzheimer’s, COPD, and even COVID-19 to arrive at his 90th birthday where he confidently proclaimed, "Another 90 would be great." He will be missed by so many but most notably by his wife, Delores “Dee”, his children Ann Clark (Dennis), Charles (Sue), Amy (Burke), Kate (John), and Andrew (Miranda), and his grandchildren Shannon McCarthy, Allison Welsh, Elizabeth Clark, Nicholas Clark, Thomas Welsh, Claudia Krampien, Charlotte Krampien, and Aila Atkinson his great-grandchildren Kristina McCarthy and Jadyn McCarthy. His brother-in-law and sister-in-law, David and Bianca Vander Wal, and his former spouse and mother of his first three children, Lou Dafoe, also survive him. | 107 | Obituary Dr. Todd D. Lavengood, 59, died in Anderson, South Carolina, on Dec. 12, 2016. Todd was born Nov. 29, 1957, in Wabash to Roy K. and M. Jean (Pyke) Lavengood. He graduated from Oak Hill High School in 1976, and he was well-liked and served as class president. He attended Purdue University, before furthering his studies at Palmer Junior College, Davenport, Iowa. At Palmer College of Chiropractic, he met his wife, Kristin, and then earned his degree as a doctor of chiropractic in 1987. He practiced as a chiropractor in Michigan for a number of years before returning to Indiana. His last employer was Dan Young in Tipton. He was a member of the Arbor Society, the N.R.A., the Chiropractic Society and Morning Star Christian Church. He enjoyed fishing, camping, any kind of water sports, golfing. He biked and hiked many trails and parks. He enjoyed seeing the Chicago Cubs win the World Series. He liked dining out at different restaurants, experiencing the many dishes they had to offer. He was always very family-oriented. Todd is survived by his wife, Kristin (Brebner); his mother, M. Jean (Pyke) Lavengood; brothers, Dr. Daniel (Cindy) Lavengood, Brian (Katrina) Lavengood, Dennis Lavengood; sister, Lori (Roy) Reinertsen; sisters- and brothers-in-law, Debie and John Routh, Steve and Barbara Brebner; mother- and father-in-law, Forest and Jane Brebner; and a host of nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, Roy K. Lavengood. Todd rededicated his life to God and was baptized in July 2016, witnessed and supported by his extended family. Todd will be greatly missed by those who love him dearly. A visitation is scheduled from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 27. The funeral will be at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 28, with Pastor Paul Boss officiating the service. Both services will take place at Hasler & Stout Funeral Home, 112 E. Main St., Greentown. | 108 | Obituary Edna Alice (Hiner) Thomas, 90, Kerrville, Texas, formerly of Kokomo, passed away Thursday, March 19, 2009, at her home, enfolded by the arms of God. She was born April 26, 1918 in Peru, the daughter of Robert Lee and Leona (Duncan) Hiner, and was raised in Peru. She married Gene Thomas on June 24, 1943. She and her husband lived in Kokomo until moving several times with Gene's job with the Carnation Company. Several years into their retirement, they built their home in Kerrville, moving in September 1988. He preceded her in death. She attended local schools in Peru, and after high school took the secretarial course at Indiana Business College in Kokomo. She put her excellent secretarial skills to good use as a private secretary at Haynes Stellite in Kokomo, and Carnation Research Laboratories in Van Nuys, Calif. She was a two-time cancer survivor, until cancer invaded her body again. She took her first hot air balloon ride at age 90, in 2008, soaring to over 9,000 feet in Colorado, as a surprise birthday gift from her grandson Daniel and his wife Mary. Survivors include a daughter, Dawn, and loving son-in-law Dennis, Coeur D'Alene, Idaho; a granddaughter, Melissa and her husband, Rick, Spokane, Wash.; and grandson, Daniel, and his wife, Mary of Highlands Ranch, Colo. Edna will finally meet her father Robert Lee Hiner, who died when Edna was just a baby, and photos of her dad was all she knew. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Gene, and her mother, Leona (Duncan) Kurz. Graveside services are 2 p.m. Friday, March 27, 2009 at New London Cemetery near Russiaville, with Pastor Steve Ailes officiating. Burial will follow in the cemetery. | 109 | Obituary Ernest “Mac” H. McQuesten, Jr., 82, passed away on Friday, July 16, 2021, at South County Hospital. Mac was the son of Ernest (Howard) and Verna McQuesten and grew up in North Reading, Massachusetts. Mac resided in Charlestown, Rhode Island, with his wife, Joyce McQuesten. His son, Jonathan, daughter-in-law, Jennette, and granddaughter, Jordan live in Colorado. He is survived by four of his siblings, Ricky, Wendy, Wayne, and Gilly. Mac served 31 years in the Navy and also retired from General Services Administration in Washington, D.C. Mac and his wife eventually moved to Rhode Island to enjoy their retirement. Mac enjoyed working in his garden. He also enjoyed meeting new people and getting to socialize and hangout. | 110 | Obituary Florence Ruth McCuistion 97 of Alton Formerly Mt. Olive Died Monday, 2:36 A. M. August 10, 2020. at her home in Alton, IL Mrs. McCuistion was born February 16, 1923, in Mt. Olive, the eldest daughter of John and Florence Schwing Lorenz. She first married George Garstang in 1945; he died in 1957, She then married Dr. Hubert McCuistion in 1977; he died in 1984. She attended Mt. Olive Schools and graduated from Mt. Olive High School Class of 1941. A registered nurse, she graduated from Alton Memorial School of Nursing and immediately went to work as an office nurse in Alton, a position she held until her retirement. She enjoyed, birds, gardening and crafting and was an exemplary needle worker, doing cross-stitch embroidery & Quilting. For many years, she contributed numerous items to the annual nurses' alumni bazaar to benefit the hospital. She was a member of Main Street Methodist Church. Alton, Il. She is survived by her sister, Roneith Anderson, of Mt. Olive, a nephew Forrest (Judy) Lorenz of Litchfield; three nieces, Carol Anderson & Joanne Anderson, both of Mt. | 111 | Obituary Jack Wendell Johnson, 83, Greentown, passed away at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, August 27, 2019, at The Legacy of Waterford Place, Kokomo. He was born August 24, 1936, in Wells County, Indiana, to Hansel and D. Kathleen (Swarts) Johnson. He graduated from Eastern High School in 1954. Jack was a lifelong farmer in Liberty Township. He had also worked at Greentown Equipment and at the Soil and Water conservation office in Kokomo. He was a member of the Greentown Masonic Lodge # 341, he was a past Master and lifetime member of over 50 years. He was a 32nd Degree Scottish Rite, a member of the Order of Eastern Star #195, Greentown, the Kokomo Shrine Club and Wildcat Tractor Club. The family would like to thank the staff at The Legacy of Waterford Place and Molly and the staff of St Vincent Hospice for their care and comfort to Jack. He is survived by his son, Mark W. Kathryn was a lifelong homemaker and enjoyed crafts, baking her famous cinnamon rolls, gardening, rides in the country, watching professional wrestling, watching races at the former Mt. Clemens Race Track and attending pow wows. He was born on November 12, 1927 in Sharpsville to Willis Earl and Rachel (Collier) Jordan. On June 19,.1955 Lyndall married Aldena Dillman and she survives. Lyndall was a 1945 West Lafayette graduate and a 1953 Purdue University graduate. He served in the Air Force achieving the rank of Sergeant from 1945 to 1949. He worked as a paint engineer for Delco Electronics and retired in 1987. Lyndall was an elder at the Kokomo Church of Christ and later a member of Chapel Christian Church. He was a volunteer at Johnson Bible College in Knoxville, TN. Survivors include his wife Aldena Jordan; son Jeffrey (Phyllis) Jordan, Gary Jordan, David (Lisa) Jordan; daughter Dena (Jim) Deweese; seven grandchildren Paul, Phillip, Rachael, Jonathan, David, Marisa, Bethany; four great grandchildren Madelynn, Conner, Emmitt, Giffin. Margie was proud of her affiliation with Ingleside Baptist Church and was a member of the Kate Davis Sunday School Class. Although never an official member of the Armed Services, she did serve our country as an Air Force wife for 30 years and then a Marine wife for 39 years. Margie was an educator with the Bibb County Public schools for 24 years, from 1968 to 1993. First as a special education teacher and then as a lower grades elementary school teacher at Burghard Elementary School in Macon. Margie was an avid gardener and she really enjoyed her vegetable garden and her flower garden. She was especially fond of her roses. Margie was also a talented artist and created numerous pastel pieces. She was a very avid reader. She always said she was keeping her mind sharp. She was born March 15, 1930, in Center, Indiana, to Jesse Earl and Dorothy (Phillips) Pyke. On June 28, 1953, she married Roy K. Lavengood, at the Converse Church of Christ, and he preceded her in death on November 20, 2015. Jean graduated from Jackson Township High School in Howard County in 1948 and from the Wishard Hospital School of Nursing in Indianapolis in 1954. She worked as a registered nurse for four years at Home Hospital in Lafayette, sixteen years at Wabash County Hospital and thirteen years at the Veteran’s Hospital in Marion. She also worked for ten years with the One Mission Society. She was a member of the Nurse’s Association and Greentown Wesleyan Church. She was born December 24, 1932, in Kokomo, the daughter of the late Carl and Edna (Walker) Shaffer. She married Wayne R. McElfresh June 22, 1952, at Main Street United Methodist Church, and he survives. Mary Rosalene was a 1951 graduate of Kokomo High School. She had worked at First National Bank before becoming a homemaker and raising her children while Wayne operated the family business. In 1975, she resumed employment outside the home and worked at First Federal Savings and Loan until retiring in 1997. She was an active member of St. Luke’s United Methodist Church where she sang in the choir for 50 years, was a member of the Builders Sunday School Class since 1958, was Director of Children’s Ministries, and a member of the Naomi Circle. She was a member of Psi Iota Xi sorority for 60 years and helped in establishing the thrift shop. She enjoyed being involved with her family, especially her children and grandchildren, and she attended most of their activities. She was a basketball fan and could be found cheering for the Kokomo Wildkats and Duke Blue Devils. A favorite hobby was window shopping, and she also loved her many hats that had been purchased over the years. Surviving, in addition to her husband, one son, Todd McElfresh of Kokomo; one daughter, Polly A. Amundson (A. Peter) of Westfield; grandchildren, Joseph McElfresh (Anne) of Charlestown, IN, Austin Amundson and Blake Amundson of Westfield; one sister-in-law, Helen Shaffer of Kokomo; two brothers-in-law, Leland McElfresh (Velma), Carl McElfresh and his significant other, Chris Ehman; several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; one brother, Bobby Shaffer; and an infant son. He was a lifelong New Castle resident and a graduate of New Castle Chrysler High School, where he participated in football and track. He was an Army Veteran of the Viet Nam War, having served one tour of duty in Viet Nam. He was a recipient of several military awards and recognitions. He was a lifetime member of The Veterans of Foreign Wars and AMVETS. He was a member of the New Castle Elks Lodge, where he was a Past Exalted Ruler. He loved family activities and will be remembered as an excellent cook and baker. He enjoyed preparing wonderful meals for his family on holidays and Sundays. He loved fishing and water skiing. Mike traveled to Canada fishing for the past 50 years in a row. His first trip was with his Father. He had enjoyed being a Big Brother with Big Brothers and Sisters of Henry County. | 122 | OBITUARY Philip H. McQuiston June 16, 1966 - May 15, 2021 Philip Henry McQuiston, 54, of West Chester, Pennsylvania, passed away suddenly on May 15th, 2021. Phil was born to Albert and Rhoda (Melson) McQuiston and raised with his five siblings in Chester County, PA. He graduated as class president from Great Valley High School in 1984 before earning a bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Delaware in 1988. While at Delaware he met Leslie (Cole), who would become his wife and best friend. The two shared an adoring marriage that thrived for three decades. Phil was highly successful and well-respected in his career as a Vice President of Capital Projects at Wood, a consulting and engineering firm. He managed many remarkable projects all over the world, including reparation of the United States Pentagon after September 11th, 2001. Loyal and driven, Phil worked at the same company for nearly 30 years. He was goal-oriented and a natural leader, accomplishing just about anything to which he set his mind. Phil had a positive outlook on life and was always on the move; walking, running, hiking, biking, swimming, golfing, weightlifting, skiing or scuba diving. He has run a marathon and once biked 100 miles in a day. Just this spring, he hiked 85 miles on the Appalachian Trail with friends and raised over $14,000 for Alzheimer's research in the process. He loved traveling the world for both work and pleasure; one highlight was a seven-week stay on the tiny Pacific atoll of Kwajalein with his wife, Leslie, where they finally witnessed an Eagles Super Bowl win. More than anything, Phil loved spending time with his family and friends, either at the family lake house in the Poconos, the beach, or on camping trips with the guys. He was always at the center of the fun; joy and laughter followed him everywhere. You could often find him coordinating games and competitions such as the Annual McQuiston Horseshoe Tournament, as well as spontaneous field trips and nights out. A true project manager in every aspect of life, he was known for leading those around him to accomplish a goal, whether it was finishing the lake house basement or cutting down trees for firewood. He was capable of fixing anything, large or small; it could be repairing the broken refrigerator or gluing a stained glass chandelier that shattered into hundreds of pieces. When he managed to sit still, Phil appreciated the value of a relaxing evening by the fire, a boat ride on the lake, a good history book, a nap on his recliner, a trip to Wawa with his beloved dogs, a cold beer with his college buddies, the “Towne Court Studs,” or riding his son’s Razor scooter to Ryerss Hunt neighborhood gatherings. Even in the darkest of places and times, Phil provided a steady and strong light, illuminating and lifting those around him. Phil is preceded in death by his father Albert M. McQuiston III (Rhoda), brother Jeffrey A. McQuiston (Celia), and father-in-law William L. Cole (Elaine). He is survived by his cherished wife, Leslie (Cole); children Ali (Brandon Smith), Susie (Sean Barry), Drew, and Kelly; dog and constant companion Bruce, and cat Little Jerry Seinfeld. | 124 | Obituary Roy Kelton Lavengood, 85, Kokomo, passed away Friday, Nov. 20, 2015, at the Hospice Of The Upstate, Anderson, South Carolina. Lavengood was born Feb. 17, 1930, in Harrison Township, Miami County, to Roy J and Ethel (Riley) Lavengood. He was married to Martha ‘Jean’ (Pyke) Lavengood on June 28, 1953, in Converse, and she survives. Mr. Lavengood was a teacher in Southwood - Noble Township schools for eight years and Oak Hill High School for nine years before going on to teach at Gary Community Schools for 10 years. Roy and Jean were also missionaries. He graduated from Clay Township school in Miami County in 1947. Before enlisting in the Army, he attended Butler University for 2 years. He enlisted in the United States Army in April 1951 and served until March 1953. He received the good conduct medal, sharp shooter medal and the European Theater ribbon, reaching the rank of Corporal. He then went on to attend Purdue University, graduating with a B.S. in Education/Guidance in 1957. He then received his Masters of Science Education and Guidance and Horticulture in 1969. Mr. Lavengood had been a member of Gideon’s International, Retired Teachers Association, Greentown Wesleyan Church, Swayzee Lion’s Club, founder of the Men for Missions and organized the Swayzee council. He enjoyed photography, landscaping and traveling. He enjoyed photographing round barns, covered bridges and lighthouses. He also enjoyed time spent with children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He is survived by his wife, M. Interment will be in the Resurrection Cemetery. John Joseph McQuiston was born August 5, 1927 in St. Paul, Minnesota to Joseph and Marjorie (Watson) McQuiston. He grew up in St. Paul and attended Cretin High School and graduated in 1945. He worked at Swift and the stock yards in South St. Paul and did some roofing before taking a position with the State of Minnesota in the Department of Agriculture. He served as a supervisor of livestock weighers throughout the State of Minnesota for many years until his retirement at the age of 84. John enjoyed hunting, fishing and doing wood working projects in the basement. The family did a lot of camping and in his younger years he converted an old school bus into a camper to keep the whole crew together. John loved animals and through the years they raised airedale terriers, chickens, pheasants and rabbits. He was born November 26, 1963, in Kokomo, the son of Wayne R. and Mary Rosalene (Shaffer) McElfresh. Todd was a 1982 graduate of Kokomo High School and was a drummer in the KHS Band. He was on the KHS Swim Team and was a K-Club member. He was an outstanding swimmer who began swimming competitively when he was eight years old and continued through high school. He was a licensed journeyman plumber and a member of Local 440 Plumbers and Pipefitters out of Indianapolis. In recent years, he assisted his father in the Mary-Mac Caramel Corn business. Todd attended the First Church of God. He was an avid Chicago Cubs and Dallas Cowboys fan. He enjoyed watching the Duke Blue Devils with his mother and was also a fan of Jeff Gordon of NASCAR fame. He was especially fond of golden retrievers. He is survived by one son, Joseph McElfresh (Anne) of Charlestown, IN; his father, Wayne R. McElfresh of Kokomo; one sister, Polly A. Amundson (A. Peter) of Westfield; two nephews, Austin and Blake Amundson, of Westfield; two uncles, Leland McElfresh (Velma) and Carl McElfresh and his significant other, Chris Ehman; one aunt, Helen Shaffer; several cousins. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Mark and Mary McElfresh and Carl and Edna Shaffer. He was also preceded in death by his mother who died July 22, 2014. They farmed in the Savage area and later moved to Dawson County in 1984. They farmed north of Glendive and Dean continued to live on the farm until the time of his death. Dean loved hunting and fishing with his children, then with his grandchildren. Winter ice fishing was his special vacation time with sons, grandsons and friends. His favorite inside games were cards, pool, and checkers. | 132 | Obituary for Kathryn McCuistion Beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother and great great grandmother, musician and occasional banker, Kathryn Smith McCuistion, age 96, passed away peacefully on Monday, November 26, 2018. The youngest of three children born to Grover Cleveland and Ada Smith, she was born in Valley View, Texas on February 27, 1922. She graduated from Valley View High School as valedictorian in 1939, but she said her greatest accomplishment was marrying a younger man, C.L. McCuistion, who, by his own admission, was not a candidate for valedictorian in his own class two years later. They had four children, Dennis, Jerry, Alan and Ann. Following stints in Henrietta, Texas, California and Ft. Worth, Kathryn and C.L. (Mac was the name everyone called him in Forney) moved to Forney in 1946. Raised in the Baptist Church, she changed her church to the First United Methodist Church where she served as pianist/organist for decades. She was also an endowed member of the Forney-Terrell Chapter #557, Order of the Eastern Star where she also served as organist. She was the consummate volunteer in all the kids’ school activities, and in addition to cooking all the meals, desserts and pinwheel cookie dough being specialties, she delivered lunches for Meals on Wheels. She was a seamstress, making her own wedding dress and sewing for kids and grandkids. Her daughter, Ann, certainly loved wearing the pretty dresses made especially for her. Not to be outdone by many women who were homemakers, she ran her own hamburger stand and, like all her kids, also spent her time working at the Forney State and later at the White Rock National Bank, earning enough to put them all through college, something she could have done for herself had she taken SMU up on their scholarship offer in 1939. She loved to travel, and her favorite trip was to the Holy Land since she accepted Jesus Christ as her Savior at age 12. She often said she was on a trip to God---a trip she has now completed. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband of 77 years, Mac , her son Jerry, and granddaughter Gina, her brother Ollie Smith and sister Pauline Wylie. She is survived by her son Dennis and wife Judy, her son Alan, her daughter Ann and husband Nick Nichols plus 8 grandchildren, 7 great grandchildren and 3 great great grandchildren. Verla Carolyn (Eddlemon) Gregory was born in Flora, Oregon January 26, 1913 to Charles Ruskin and Martha Marion (Casteel) Eddlemon. Her father passed away when she was one and a half years old. She and her sister, Vera, were raised by their grandmother, Martha Jane (McQuistion) Casteel, at the Monroe Casteel homestead on Day Ridge, while her mother taught school and worked. When Verla was 7 the family moved to Wallowa for school. She was captain of her girls’ 1928 basketball team and graduated from Wallowa High School with the class of 1929. Verla was an active member of the Wallowa Methodist Church, Epworth League and the Chi Chi Club. In 1939 she married John J. Gregory and they farmed east of Wallowa until 1947. They then moved to La Grande where her husband was a rancher in the south end of the valley. Verla was a past Matron of Eastern Star and a member of the La Grande Country Club. She was an excellent pianist and seamstress. She enjoyed knitting, reading, bridge, golf, bird watching, crossword puzzles, and sudoku. She was a great cook and canned pickles, peaches, green beans and tomatoes for many, many years. Her children, grandchildren, and great- grandchildren were especially important to her, and she was special to them. She is survived by her daughters and their spouses, Margaret and Sam Wade of Lostine and Jean and Neil Cooper of La Grande. Her grandchildren are Greg (and Jean) Wade of Los Angeles, Kristi Wade of Lostine, Traci (and Mitch) Frye of Enterprise, Cari (and Tim) Markham of Boise, and Derek (and Gailen) Cooper of La Grande. After raising her sons, Nancy received a nursing degree at Triton Community College and following in her mothers footsteps, became a nurse. Her last job was working at the Veterans Administration hospital in Hines IL, retiring in 1996. Nancy enjoyed vacationing at her condo in Florida and traveling to Europe, as well as loving to be around her grandchildren. He was born on Sept. 26, 1938, in Kokomo to the late Lewis C. and Delihia (Stephens) McQuiston. On Dec. 10, 1960, in Kokomo he married Sharon A. Chorrushi; she survives. Jim and his wife, Sharon, have lived in the Monticello area for the last several years, coming from Kokomo. He was the youngest of 14 siblings, Clara, Lewis Corbin Jr., Glen, Kenneth, Margaret, Anna, Betty, Katherine, Mildred, Charles, Herbert, Robert, and Patricia. Jim served in the United States Navy from 1956 - 1962 as a Machinist Mate First Class. He retired from Continental Steel of Kokomo. At the age of 14, Jim and his best friend, Joe Moser, worked laying railroad tracks. While attending Kokomo High School, he worked at the A & P Grocery Store as a stock boy. Jim loved spending time at home tinkering in his shop creating wood art, smoking his pipe, working crossword puzzles, pampering his cat, Joe, and admiring and marveling at nature. He was admired by all who knew him. Surviving are wife, Sharon A. | 143 | Rose Louise McQuiston February 19, 1941 - September 14, 2021 Rose Louise McQuiston, 80, a resident of Wesbury Care Cottage and formerly of Harmonsburg, passed away at the Meadville Medical Center on Tuesday, September 14, 2021. She was born February 19, 1941, in Atlantic, a daughter of Marian Morian. She was a graduate of Conneaut Lake High School in 1958. Rose worked as an aide in the Summit grade school in Harmonsburg for many years. Rose was an avid card player and enjoyed going to the senior center in Meadville with all the ladies. She enjoyed watching NASCAR racing, football, baseball and science fiction movies. Also in her spare time, Rose enjoyed doing crossword puzzles and word searches. Survivors include a son, Tim McQuiston and his wife, Brenda, of Linesville; a daughter, Diane Litwiler of Conneaut Lake; five grandchildren, Michael McQuiston and his wife, Lori, Katie King and her husband, Brandon, Trevor Litwiler and his wife, Shelly, Amber Jacobs and her husband, Matt, and Challen Culbertson and her husband, Zack; five great-grandchildren, Paige, Hailey, Landon, Mason and Noah; a sister, Mary Lee and her husband, Jim, of Jamestown, New York; three brothers, Ken Morian and his wife, Melanie, of Conneaut Lake, Paul Morian of Conneaut Lake and David Morian of Atlantic; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her mother, Marian Morian and a son, Mark McQuiston. Per Rose's request a private memorial service will be held. Burial will be in Linesville Cemetery. She was born Oct. 7, 1948, in Murray, to Trellis Parker McCuiston and Emma Lee McKinney McCuiston. She was a homemaker, a member of First Baptist Church of Murray, and the Bill Adams Sunday school class. She was a member of the Chapter KY-Y of the Gold Wing Road Riders Association. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one sister, Pamela Kay McCuiston; and one grandson, Matthew Austin Edwards. Mrs. Edwards is survived by her husband, Donald “Don” K. Edwards of Murray; two sons, David Keith Edwards and wife Dawn of Benton and Christopher Michael Edwards and wife Fran of Alexandria, Virginia; seven grandchildren, Colton Holstead of Benton, O’Bryen Edwards of Columbus, Ohio, Gavriella Edwards, Siobhan Edwards, Malcolm Edwards, Lochlan Edwards and Rhys Edwards, all of Alexandria; one aunt, Gladys Tucker of Hopkinsville; three sisters-in-law, Georgia Lou Lockhart of Hazel, Norma Ford and husband H.L. of Murray and Shirley Edwards of Murray; and one brother-in-law, Ron Edwards and wife Pat of Roseburg, Ohio. Lauderdale, passed away Wednesday, February 2, 2011. Born in Watoma, WI. in 1911, she and husband, Rev. Clarence C. Stauffer, moved to Wilton Manors in 1943 where he founded the First Christian Church of Wilton Manors. Jean served 27 years as organist & choir director for the church. She also directed the Little Peoples Preschool for 25 years. She was widely recognized as an outstanding teacher, who enabled her students to excel. | 147 | Thomas McGinnis Obituary In Loving Memory Thomas Edward McGinnis Jan. 22, 1933 - July 21, 2020 Thomas Edward McGinnis was born Jan. 22, 1933 and passed away in his home state of Oregon July 21, 2020, surrounded by his family and loved ones. He was the proud father to nine children and "Papa" to 15 grandchildren. Among many of his achievements were graduating from the University of Oregon in 1958 followed by the Thunderbird School of Global Management in Glendale, Ariz. But, perhaps his most important achievement was in 1974, when he met his wife of 44 years, Maggie McGinnis. Maggie and Tom were "Snow Birds." They enjoyed escaping the cold Oregon winters and traveling south to their beautiful home, tucked into the foothills of Tucson, Ariz., where Tom was a dedicated steward of his citrus orchard. He also enjoyed feeding and identifying the local hummingbirds. However, not all of his hobbies fell on deaf ears. He had a passion for collecting and winding Cuckoo clocks, much to his families playful annoyance. A true Irishmen at heart, Tom and Maggie were famous for their annual St. Patrick's Day Soiree's where you could find Tom, the life of the party, wearing a Kelly green bow tie and holding an Irish whiskey. When not in the desert, Tom could be found whale watching, clamming or tending to his adored home in Wheeler, Ore. For Tom, life and family were synonymous. He was born on Sept. 17, 1970, in Chattanooga, Tennessee. He was preceded in death by his father, D. Roy McCuiston and a stepson, Michael Gregory. Wesley was a 1989 graduate of Tyner High School. He worked for Norfolk Southern Rail Road for the past 17 years. He loved working outdoors. He was a longtime member of the National Rifle Association.. He was an avid hunter and fisherman. He was a huge Tennessee Vols fan. Survivors include his wife of 30 years, Rebecca “Becky” McCuiston, children, Britni McCuiston and Charles “CW” McCuiston, mother, Charlene McCuiston, sister, Kim McCuiston Williamson, a niece and several nephews and a great niece and great nephews. | 150 | Gabrielle Sollo Swofford Gabrielle Sollo Swofford died on Wednesday, October 5, 2011, at the Colonnades in Charlottesville, Virginia. For the past two years, Gabrielle had been residing in the Alzheimer's unit at the Colonnades. She was born on July 18, 1937, in Moline, Illinois, the daughter of Frank and Buel Sollo. She graduated from high school in Moline and then attended Duke University where she received a BA degree in Chemistry. She subsequently earned a Masters of Arts from Colorado University in Boulder, Colorado. During her life, Gabrielle was always interested in animals. She was a member of the United States Pony Club and encouraged her daughter to participate in all phases of the organization's riding programs. She had a fondest for dogs and always had two or more large dogs as part of her household. In her later years she became interested in the "Guiding Eyes for the Blind" program. She served as a trainer for young dogs entering the program by keeping them for two years prior to the dogs entering the formal part of their training. After moving about the country for several years with her first husband, Frank W. Swofford, they settled in Fairfax County, Virginia. While there Gabrielle raised her two children. She served as a mathematics teacher in the Fairfax County school system for six years. In 1996, Gabrielle moved to Greene County residing in the countryside where she could enjoy her large dogs. After a period of time, she joined the staff of the Thomas Jefferson Regional Library working in the Greene County branch. In 2001, Gabrielle married C. Ralph Renfro and they continued to reside in Greene County until moving into the Colonnades in 2007. Gabrielle is survived by her husband, Ralph Renfro and her daughter, Kristin Swofford McGraw, who resides in Seffner, Florida. A memorial service will be held at a later date in Arlington, Virginia.
