Obituary for William "Wild Bill" Patrick McQuiston
William "Wild Bill" Patrick McQuiston, 48, of Iowa Falls, passed away Saturday, May 26, 2018 at Mercy North Iowa in Mason City. A Celebration of Life will be held at 2:00 pm on Saturday, June 9, 2018 at the 503 Bar and Backyard in Iowa Falls. Woodley Funeral Home, LLC of Iowa Falls is caring for the family.

William “Wild Bill” Patrick McQuiston was born on Friday, February 13, 1970 in Des Moines, Iowa to Larry and Delores McQuiston. He attended Cedar Falls High School, Marshalltown Community College and Kirkwood Community College. Bill was employed with Hadwiger Roofing for over twenty years.

Bill was passionate about many things in his life. He was a musician and played bass guitar in several bands over the past thirty years. He never missed a chance at a jam session or to ask bands if he could stand in for a song or two, and then declare that he was “with the band”. Bill loved to entertain a karaoke crowd when he and his friends would sing “Elvira”. He had a love for all sports teams black and gold – the Iowa Hawkeyes, Pittsburgh Penguins, Pittsburgh Steelers and Pittsburgh Pirates could bring him to tears on any given day. He also became addicted to watching curling during the last Olympics. For many years, Bill was a slow-pitch softball pitcher for the Hadwiger Roofing Nailers and nothing made him more proud than bringing home several tournament trophies. He enjoyed traveling. Some of his favorite memories were from the several cruises he went on, as well as trips to Mexico and other places across the United States. Bill enjoyed spending weekends in Des Moines and Okoboji and his favorite destination in the world was St. Thomas, USVI. Other hobbies included: golf, camping, playing pool in league, challenging anyone and everyone to any bar game available, sitting by a campfire, boating, playing cribbage, Texas Hold ‘Em and scratching lottery tickets.

Bill had a larger than life personality and truly never met a stranger. He loved his mother more than anything and his “Babezz” was a close second. What really kept him going was his unconditional love for all of his friends. His friends were his family and that’s who he lived for. He never turned down an opportunity to help someone, had a heart of gold, and cared very deeply for others. If they were hurting, so was he. If they were partying, so was he. He improved the life of so many, just by knowing him. Bill always said that he considered himself lucky to be a part of the Hadwiger Roofing crew, because it wasn’t just a job to him, but another family. He loved hanging out at the shop with the guys, thought the Christmas party was the biggest event of the year, and said that he had the best bosses that anyone could ask for. He was heavily invested in everyone that walked through the doors of the 503 Bar and Backyard and was a fixture there. He considered himself in charge of the backyard, including, but not limited to, the TV remote. He cared so much about the people and the actual bar that he appointed himself head of security. Everyone that he talked to there heard him say “And by the way, I drink Budweiser” at least once.

Wild Bill worked hard, played hard, lived hard. He experienced ten lifetimes worth of events in his short 48 years. His charisma, his voice, his hugs and his loving heart will be deeply missed in the upcoming days, months and years. Good times followed him around like a shadow….

Bill is survived by his partner of twelve years, Karrie Vander Sluis of Des Moines, Iowa; his mother, Delores McQuiston of Iowa Falls, Iowa; brothers, Tim (Liz) Harris of St. Thomas, USVI and Craig (Sarah) Harris of Bristow, Iowa and a sister, Dawn Vance of Waterloo, Iowa; six nieces, two nephews, three great nephews, three great nieces and countless friends. He was preceded in death by his father and his grandparents.
