      In 1883 John William Cox Jr. and Noah McCuistion drove 1000 head of cattle from Lanes Chapel Bosque Co. TX. to the Datil area of western New Mexico where he started a big ranch in the Datil and Mangas mountains. The ranch was known as the slash JL. The ranch was located between the Alegres , Crosby and Mangas Mountains. Cox Peak which is between the Alegres and Crosby,was named for him. The main ranch house was at the foot of the Alegres Peak. In may of 1915 while hauling a wagon of barbed wire to his place at the Mangas mountains, a spool rolled off and caught his spur and dragged him off the wagon, spooked the mules and was dragged by the wagon. He died from his injuries the next day. The area was one of the last open ranges in New Mexico. The story of his ranches last roundup is told in the March 1975 issue of The True West Frontier Times Magazine. It was said at the time of his death that he had 6000 head of cattle and 250,000 in the bank. In 1918 John's wife Ettie McCuistion married Zeb Brooks one of his ranch hands they went through the money sold the ranch and moved to Pine Top, Arizona where Ettie died in destitute conditions.
