Gender Female Died 30 Jun 1843 Slippery Rock Township, Butler County, Pennsylvania [2, 3] - Margaret and her children were murdered by a drunken Indian named Sam Mohawk. James Wigdon, her husband, was not home at the time as he had risen early to go to his father's home to borrow a horse. He was persuaded to remain at his father's for breakfast. He returned home about eight o'clock to find that during his absence, and presumably soon after daylight, his wife and children had been murdered by having their skulls crushed by a stone. The Indian was captured on the day of his bloody deed, and after due process of law, was hanged 20 March 1844, for the crime which he readily confessed, giving all the terrible details. He said he killed Mrs. Wigdon first as she knelt in prayer and the baby last. He said, "When I went to the crib, the baby looked up and laughed and I had a mind to not kill it but finally decided if I did not, he would be a saucy white man some day. So I lifted it and struck it on the back of the head." The baby was still alive when his father came home and apparently had not been injured, but died immediately when his crushed head was raised from the pillow.
