John Moore Bunch was born on the Bunch farm in Guilford County, North Carolina, on June 7, 1790. He was the son of William Bunch (1752-1831) and Nancy Moore Bunch (1752-1843). In 1835, the year before he was married, he built a house on the farm. The house was built on the south side of Reedy Fork Creek. The original portion of the house, of log construction, had one large room and two small rooms downstairs and one large room upstairs, with a stairway in the northwest corner. John Moore Bunch married Jane McQuiston Johnson on June 23, 1836. They had eight children, one of whom was Walter Anderson Bunch, Sr.
At least three of the sons of John Moore Bunch and Jane McQuiston Johnson Bunch served in the Confederate Army during the Civil War. William Harrison Bunch, who was born on September 24, 1837, enlisted in Guilford County, N.C. at age 25 on July 15, 1862 for the war. He was a private in Company A, known as the "Albemarle Guards". He was captured by the Union Army at Spotsylvania Court House, Virginia, on May 12, 1864 and confined at Point Lookout, Maryland, until he was transferred to Elmira, N.Y. on August 3, 1864. He was released after taking the Oath of Allegiance on June 12, 1865. His brother, Pouncey Johnson Bunch, who was born on August 7, 1839, also enlisted in Guilford County, N.C. at age 22 on July 15, 1862 for the war. He was also a private in Company A, known as the "Albemarle Guards". He was captured by the Union Army at Farmville, Virginia on April 6, 1865 and confined at Point Lookout, Maryland, until he was released after taking the Oath of Allegiance on June 1, 1865. Their brother, James Calvin Bunch, who was born on November 29, 1841, enlisted at age 20 on February 28, 1862. He was mustered in as a corporal and served in Company F. He died in a hospital at Petersburg, Virginia on October 27, 1862 of "febris typhoides". Their brother, John Cameron Bunch, who was born on December 29, 1843, enlisted in Guilford County, N.C. at age 20 on March 5, 1864 and served until May 1, 1865. Walter Anderson Bunch, Sr., who became the Methodist Protestant preacher, was apparently too young to serve in the Confederate Army, as he was born on March 15, 1846.
John Moore Bunch was a farmer, horse trader and lay horse doctor. He died on April 28, 1868.
