Mary Rosalene McElfresh, 81, Kokomo, died Tuesday, July 22, 2014, at Reflections at Wellington. She was born December 24, 1932, in Kokomo, the daughter of the late Carl and Edna (Walker) Shaffer. She married Wayne R. McElfresh June 22, 1952, at Main Street United Methodist Church, and he survives.
Mary Rosalene was a 1951 graduate of Kokomo High School. She had worked at First National Bank before becoming a homemaker and raising her children while Wayne operated the family business. In 1975, she resumed employment outside the home and worked at First Federal Savings and Loan until retiring in 1997.
She was an active member of St. Luke’s United Methodist Church where she sang in the choir for 50 years, was a member of the Builders Sunday School Class since 1958, was Director of Children’s Ministries, and a member of the Naomi Circle. She was a member of Psi Iota Xi sorority for 60 years and helped in establishing the thrift shop.
She enjoyed being involved with her family, especially her children and grandchildren, and she attended most of their activities. She was a basketball fan and could be found cheering for the Kokomo Wildkats and Duke Blue Devils. A favorite hobby was window shopping, and she also loved her many hats that had been purchased over the years.
Surviving, in addition to her husband, one son, Todd McElfresh of Kokomo; one daughter, Polly A. Amundson (A. Peter) of Westfield; grandchildren, Joseph McElfresh (Anne) of Charlestown, IN, Austin Amundson and Blake Amundson of Westfield; one sister-in-law, Helen Shaffer of Kokomo; two brothers-in-law, Leland McElfresh (Velma), Carl McElfresh and his significant other, Chris Ehman; several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; one brother, Bobby Shaffer; and an infant son.
Funeral services will be at 1:00 p.m. Monday at St. Luke United Methodist Church, 700 East Southway Blvd. with Pastor Mitch Norwood officiating. Burial will follow in Sunset Memory Garden Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 4:00 until 8:00 p.m. Sunday at Shirley & Stout Funeral Home & Crematory, Lincoln Road Chapel, 1315 W. Lincoln Rd. and one hour prior to the service at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Luke UMC and/or Alzheimer’s Assn. and/or Psi Iota Xi Sorority to benefit the speech and hearing clinic.
The family wishes to thank Samaritan Caregivers, the staff at Reflections at Wellington, and the staff at Southern Care Hospice for their care during Mary Rosalene’s illness
