      Mathis was a quiet boy who had a dry wit about him. A hard worker and true patriot to his country. He was drafted a few days after Pearl Harbor and after training at Fort Sill he was sent to Sydney Austrailia. He voluntiered for sniper patrole. Sitting in a fox hole he loaned his .45 to a buddy. Emit Perkins shot one of the jap snipers, then Mathis was hit in the head. An order was given to retreat and the body was never recovered. He died in the Battle of Buna. His mother had a marker placed in the family plot years later to mark his sacrafice. His father was Joseph De Mossie Moore and his mother was Margaret Emma Dotson Moore. Mathis's body was never recovered.

      He was known to his family as "Daddy Joe". His father died when he was 6 and his mother died when he was 11. He ran away from his step father a few months later. No family would take him in so he worked as a water boy and farm hand on a lumber plantation owned by the Lanier Family. The cook, a former slave, taught him to read by using the Bible. He worked as a farm hand until 1905. In '04 he married the county sweetheart, Maggie Emma Dotson. In Oaklahoma he was able to help build a small town known as Frederick. He was able to purchase his own farm after a few years and leased many others. He became King of Cotton in 1917. The same year he drilled for Oil in Burkbernet then opened a grociery store. in 1919 he opened The Consumer Oil Company. in '20 he opened the first two gas stations and a hardware. He purchased a 5 bedroom home with a servant quarters in 1919. He even owned a new '27 Lincoln Limo. In 1924 he opened the Bank of Commerce in Fredrick and Lawton. Then the crash of '29 took it all. He lost everything and had to mortgage his hime. He returned to farming, an occupation he remained in until his death in 1963. His wife died in 1976. Together they had 12 children. Three of them died under the age of two and one son, Mathis Moore was killed in the battle of Buna in the Phillipiens in 1942. He was a dedicated church of Christ member until his death. His life was right out of a Holliwood movie of rags to riches. He died on the opperating table while in surgery. He had prostrate cancer.
