(McChristian) Bryant, of Pateros, WA, went to Heaven on Friday, November 30, 2012, at the Three Rivers Hospital in Brewster, WA, in the presence of family and friends. Velma was born July 22, 1932, in Japton, AR, to Charles and Hazel McChristian. In 1944, she and her family moved to Washington State, to the small town of Methow. She attended school at a one-room school in Methow, until her family moved to Pateros, WA. Velma attended school there until she graduated in 1952. In May of 1953, she married Gerald Bryant, whom she had known in high school. They lived in Pateros, where she packed apples in the local warehouse and was also a homemaker. She was extremely adept at baking all pies, especially apple. In August of 1954, their first of three children (all girls) were born and, in 1956 and 1961, they were blessed with two more girls. In 1968, she and her family moved to Azwell, WA, where they owned and operated a small store and Post Office. Velma was the Postmaster and also worked in the store, until closing it in 1975. In 1975, Velma went to work for Douglas County P.U.D. as a fish counter. She continued at that job until she retired in 1997. In 1997, Velma and husband, Gerald, moved back to their home that they owned in Pateros. Velma was a wonderful wife, mother and grandmother to all of her family and grandkids. She will surely be missed by all who knew her. Velma was preceded in death by her father and mother; two sisters; and two brothers. She is survived by her husband, Gerald of Pateros; her four children, Jerri Hofmann (Mark) of Pateros, Jana Gabavac (Bob) of Raymond, Alberta, Canada, Jama Hiltz of Mt. Vernon, WA and Alejandro Hernandez (Wendy) of Pateros; two sisters, Vicki Hull (Charles) of Brewster and Lexi Whiteman of Stockton, CA; and nine grandchildren. At Velma’s request, there will be No Services at this time.
